About the Maker

Interested in all art forms since childhood, I participated in various dance and drama competitions in school as well as college. After 10th standard, I met a commercial artist who introduced me to Applied Art and Calligraphy. I eventually graduated with a BFA-APPLIED from Rachana Sansad College of Applied Art.

My moment of inspiration came in 2008 when I attended CALLIFEST at JJ school of arts, which was conducted by Sir Achyut Palav, India’s most renowned Calligrapher. After seeing the beautiful works of art displayed there and a demo by Sir Palav himself, I knew that this is what I wanted to do, no matter what it takes. Sir Palav spoke to me at the exhibition and introduced me to Sir Ram Kasture, who conducted calligraphy classes close to my home. Sir Kasture would become by teacher and mentor and everything I know about calligraphy today can be credited to him.

When I started I primarily used chisel cut markets, bow pens, various cut nibs and brushes. Today as I explore calligraphy on my own, I have started experimenting with injections, shaving brushes, sponges and other tools. Calligraphy can be done with any tool; it depends on how the artist uses it.

The key in calligraphy is to be confident since strokes cannot be planned and have to be created in a fraction of a second. Especially when you are doing speed calligraphy, the challenge is to be quick, stylish and also make the stroke readable.

Most of my work has involved Devnagari script and a little Latin script. I am currently working on developing more Latin calligraphy. Lettering is priority is calligraphy today and I take inspiration from lettering I see on Pinterest and other online sources. My plan is to develop as an artist by learning multiple scripts (Indian and foreign) and execute them in innovative mediums.

Being an artist in urban India is tough as children are forced to pursue more mainstream areas in academics. I have been fortunate to have gotten tremendous support from my family to help me get to where I am today and aim higher in the future.
