Vincent Van Gogh was astoundingly prolific, producing all of his works during a short 10-year period. Although he only sold one painting in his lifetime, he inspired numerous future artistic movements.

Little is known of Van Gogh's activities during the two years he in Paris, 1886-1888. The fact that he had painted Sunflowers already is only revealed in spring 1889. The one shown here is probably his first finished work (it was preceded by a small study) in the wider ‘nothing but sunflowers’ range. When his good friend and collaborator Gauguin requested this for himself, van Gogh refused and said “I am definitely keeping my sunflowers in question.”
