Meet the maker: Anurag, Abhishek, Shivam & Piyush – Captain KYSO

It is said that all good things come in threes. If the brains behind Captain KYSO are to be believed, though, they sometimes come in fours too. “Well, we have been thinking of reasons to kick Abhishek out!” jokes Anurag. And that’s what Captain KYSO is all about. A fun design based brand, it is run by four friends — Shivam, Anurag, Abhishek, and Piyush.

It is said that all good things come in threes. If the brains behind Captain KYSO are to be believed, though, they sometimes come in fours too. “Well, we have been thinking of reasons to kick Abhishek out!” jokes Anurag. And that’s what Captain KYSO is all about. A fun design based brand, it is run by four friends — Shivam Shah, Anurag Saha, Abhishek Paul, and Piyush Malhotra.

Left to Right: Anurag, Shivam, Piyush, and Abhishek.

The four, who are proud, self-taught entrepreneurs, studied together at JD Birla, a Business management college at Kolkata. “We dared to have a vision of owning a brand that consists of a community of International artists,” says a beaming Shivam. “We love nothing more than to cater to a wide variety of graphic design-lovers.”

But what is Captain KYSO all about?

“Captain KYSO is a platform that allows artists to submit their designs and earn from the same,” explains Piyush. “Their designs get printed largely on our tees, and occasionally graphic iPhone 5 and 6 cases. We intend on launching more product categories where these wonderful designs can be showcased.”

Brilliant designs, showcased on KYSO tees

KYSO is actually an acronym that stands for Keep Your Shirt On — which doubles up as the brand’s motto as well. A brilliant design is the brand’s primary criterion, and they often try to build a story around the same. “Each design has a background story that gives the artwork its character,” says Abhishek. “You can read up on the background stories on our website, which allows you to connect with and get a better understanding and feel of what you’re spending your hard-earned money on.”

Anurag says that anyone who loves quirky designs or simply likes to wear art are people they love to associate their products with. “Our designs are contributed by a variety of designers who come from diverse backgrounds. All of them have their own unique stories and styles, or as one could say, a part of them, represented on our shirts.”

“Anyone who resonates with any of our numerous designs can get their hands on the prints — spanning from people who appreciate witty humour, pop culture, superhero parodies, or even simple abstract and surreal art,” Shivam adds. “Our aim is to be the go-to place where artists can come together and discuss art and design, with contributions coming in from our forum members. We take pride in associating ourselves with this rather special group of talented people!” At present, the brand has over 130 artists from 36 different countries on board.

So what’s next for Captain KYSO?

“It’s been one heck of journey for us — I won’t lie. But what we’ve come to realise is that when the tough times come around (and they come around more often than easy times), it helps to Keep Your Shirt On!”, says Piyush. “It’s been a great learning curve for all of us and we intend to keep evolving to help serve our community of talented designers and of course, our valued customers.”

“We intend on coming out with tons of new designs from International Artists as well as encouraging more Indian Artists to be a part of our community,” Abhishek adds. “We’re also planning on introducing some new product categories like Mugs and Wall Art. A few themed contests would also be up soon, where the winners of the contest stand a chance to have their designs printed on our products.”

“We consider all our fans to be superheroes in their own right — and we’d love nothing more than to be the superheroes of your wardrobe!” Anurag concludes.
