Before WonkyWorks, the heart and soul of WonkyWorks was stuck trying to do creative commercial art at an advertising agency in Mumbai.
And on that short introductory note, over to you, Ekta!
Why did you choose to do what you do?
Glass caught my fancy and instead of doing it someday later, I went and learnt how to work with it in various techniques.
We are fascinated by names. What’s the story behind your brand name?
After working in an advertising agency, which I feel is a cage for true creativity, I wanted a brand which would not be bound by any rules…of design or of manufacturing. So I took the Wonky word and made it mine, in order to remind myself to love the kitschy, the skewed, the fuddled, and the precarious.
In the age of factory-manufactured perfectness, we are here to celebrate the odd fish, the curious and funny, the peculiar and queer. This war against the mundane and routine led me to found WonkyWorks in order to create a difference in the fight against organised sameness.
Which are your best selling products?
The Superbatli, Mini Wonky Vases, Chappat Planter, Drunken Bottle, Handy Bottles, Mini Wonky Bottles with cork.
What kind of people do you create your products for?
WonkyWorks is for people who appreciate a little quirk in their life. And people looking to buy into a greener and sustainable lifestyle.
What are the challenges you face in connection with achieving your goals?
We’re new. So brand awareness is low. This is also because I don’t have a person/partner to help with the marketing. Our growth has been pretty organic mainly from word-of-mouth and actual product experience at exhibitions and shows.
Where do you see your brand three years from now?
I want to get into upcycling, and not just in glass, but with various other materials as well. Especially materials that aren’t recyclable very easily.
Finally, what would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?
Stuck in a cage somewhere!
