Beginning Funky Dory

Working in Marketing at a prominent FMCG company, Gayatri’s heart was set on doing something different, something more fulfilling, some more creative. So, one fine day, after thinking about it for what seemed like a long time, she decided it was a good time to go for it. Thus was Funky Dory born on Sep 1st 2016.

Naming Funky Dory

To make a mark that will be remembered, one of the things you could do with is an evocative name, which Funky Dory most certainly is. Gayatri says people ask her the story behind the name all the time. She also insists she has no idea how the name came to her. Well, a flash of inspirational word play that makes a great impression is what we shall put it down to.

Inside Funky Dory

Funky Dory makes all their products by hand in-house. They have a cosy workshop in Oshiwara, Andheri. The core team behind Funky Dory begins with Gayatri Thampi. She is 28 years old and has a background in Marketing Media, Automobiles, and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).

In the run up to the launch, she hired two interns to help her shape the building blocks of the business. They were, Priya Bhatiya (21) was a Finance Graduate and Aakruti Sejpal (21) a Fashion Design Student. Together, they set up the company.

Currently, Funky Dory comprises Gayatri, a master Tailor ‘Ali’, who manages a team of two tailors, the Office Assistant, ‘Kiran’, and a third party vendor who brings their Trunk full of ideas to reality. In a nutshell, this is a small team with big dreams.

Learning Funky Dory

The category of storage trunks doesn’t have any significant brand or designer attached to it. Funky Dory is a fresh product idea. Gayatri has had no formal training or education in Apparels / Fashion / Interiors. What she has is a creative bent of mind and the desire to bring her most interesting ideas to life. The art of Funky Dory is something she has taught herself and her team to nurture.

Challenging Funky Dory

There are many challenges Funky Dory has to grapple with. Getting work done on time, meeting deadlines, maintaining high quality standards, and motivating people to work for reasons other than just money are the ones she mentions most readily. In short, staying on top of the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur is her greatest challenge.

Future Funky Dory

“I see myself as a game changer in the e-Commerce industry. I think customization is the flavour of the day, and I wish to take online customization to the next level, be it trunks or apparels.” – Gayatri Thampi, Founder – Funky Dory

Way to go, Gayatri! We look forward to being an integral part of your creative journey and doing all we can to ensure things are hunky dory for Funky Dory.
