Meet the Maker: Gopendra Pratap Singh & Malavika Singh – Gomaads

Catching up with Malavika, co-founder of Gomaads, a design studio that sculpts lifestyle products in concrete, imagination, and creativity.

GOMAADS is a design studio that sculpts lifestyle products in concrete, imagination, and creativity. It is located in Noida and comprises Gopendra Pratap Singh, who is an architect, and Malavika Singh, who is an interior designer. In this week’s episode of Meet the Maker, we chatted with Malavika in order to get to know GOMAADS. You are cordially invited to discover what we found out. Welcome.      

What were you doing before you started doing this?

We were designing spaces.

Why did you choose to do what you do?

Due to our background in interior design and architecture, we were in love with exposed concrete. The honesty of the material attracted us. We felt that its true potential needed to be explored. So we got our hands dirty and began casting. 


We are fascinated by names. What’s the story behind your brand name?

The name actually signifies the initial two letters of our names – GO+MA+AD (Aditi being the third co-founder who moved on to pursue other interests 3 years back), we connected it with the word MAD because to us and everyone else around our experiments and choice of material was a mad fun journey!


Which are your best selling products?

I would have to say the clocks and the planters. 

What kind of people do you create your products for?

Our clients are discerning creative people that believe in the value of the handmade. Our work will resonate with people who like to be true to materials and seek their maximum potential. Also, those who enjoy a minimal and embellishment-free approach to design and products around them will appreciate our work. 


What are the challenges you face in connection with achieving your goals?

I think Marketing is the biggest challenge. India is still opening up to contemporary aesthetics and many people still do find the material inappropriate (as in too bare and lacks bling!!). However, having said that, there are now ardent loyalists who enjoy the material and textures that concrete can create.  

Where do you see your brand three years from now?

Three years from now, hopefully GOMAADS would’ve diversified into furniture, more of lighting, and also some beautiful combinations with other material like wood and metal.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?

Haven’t really thought about that! Maybe what we were doing previously is what we would still be doing. One thing is for sure, it would be something creative and definitely related to designing (products/spaces).
