Meet the maker: Kavya Sundaram – Studio Dhi

What’s the difference between a house and a home? A house is habitable, but it lacks the warmth, comfort, and aesthetics that a home provides. Studio Dhi, simply put, helps transform a house into your home.

What’s the difference between a house and a home? A house is habitable, but it lacks the warmth, comfort, and aesthetics that a home provides. Studio Dhi, simply put, helps transform a house into your home.

Meet Kavya Sundaram — the founder of the brand that produces a range of stunning home decor products. An architect by profession, 23-year-old Kavya’s cause is bolstered by Ramya Sundaram, the business development expert, and Mithun Stephen who’s the marketing head of the brand.

The Beginnings

“The country produces scores of talented architects and interior designers who hold the potential to design innovative spaces and yet, there is hardly any expertise in the home decor area,” Kavya explains. “Home Decor plays a role that is just as important as the building envelop. At Studio Dhi, we firmly believe that the space you inhabit should be an extension of yourself. It should define your character, your mood, and help you express yourself. That very idea formed the basis of Studio Dhi as a brand.”

During the brand’s on-field research with home décor items, there was a startling revelation. “To our surprise, we found that the décor and furnishings that existed a decade ago are still being used today. Everyone has their own dream space but thanks to the lack of innovative products in the market, they are forced to make more than a few compromises.”

Studio Dhi, she says, was created to rectify just that.

The Significance of ‘Dhi’

‘Dhi’ is a Sanskrit word whose translations range from being meaningful, understanding, reflection, design, intelligence, opinion, meditation and lot more. Kavya says that everything she wanted to say about my brand fit perfectly the three beautiful letters.

The Products

Studio Dhi focuses on creating minimalistic luxury lighting and decor. “Thus far, we have designed some gorgeous 2D lamps and the Himalayan Salt lamps,” says Kavya. “Our aim is to create products that stir the imagination and help uplift the mood of everyone in the room. We also want to dabble in interiors, which will be custom made for our customers. Everything started with an interest in the industry but the more brands we get to know, the more we realise that the mass production items aren’t impressive in the slightest. Our aim is to provide what’s not available in the market — exclusive and stunning high-quality products made that are made with love.”

Kavya also adds that the focus is on creating a family friendly décor that can be enjoyed by everyone. “We aim at creating durable as well as creative décor that keeps the design oriented members of the family happy.”

The Future

Kavya says the brand is soon going to introduce a range of flower vases, clocks, and various wall arts whose designs are fresh and exclusive. “The idea is to bring about a change in the design industry one interior space at a time,” she says. “In the near future, we’ll be introducing a complete range of home decor products to adorn your home. Considering it’s a delicate task that requires incredible precision, we hope our products will help you create that perfect space you’ve always craved.”
