Meet the Maker: Nandini Mehta – Dancing Leaf

Nandini Mehta’s 12 year old daughter came up with the name Dancing Leaf. You are cordially invited to get to know Nandini and Dancing Leaf better.

When we asked Nandini Mehta (founder of Dancing Leaf) about the brand name, here’s what she said: So, my youngest daughter Parmangana came up with the name when she was 12 years old. The question she asked me is “Mumma what do you see when you brew your tea in a cup?” And to that I said, “I see them dancing in the cup.” To which she replied, “Then there’s your name, Mummy, Dancing Leaf!”

We chatted with Nandini about other things as well. It made for a most stimulating conversation. You are cordially invited to get to know Nandini and Dancing Leaf better. Welcome.

If possible, please describe your brand in not more than 10 words

We are curators of fine artisanal teas and teaware.

Where are you located?

Worli, Mumbai

What were you doing before you started doing this?

I had a line of clothing and was working on the same from home.

Why did you choose to do what you do?

I was always very fond of teas, the entire art of brewing and the process it involves. And since India is one of the largest tea-drinking nations, I thought to myself that it would be a good space to venture into and spread an awareness about different kinds of teas available in India and globally. Thus, I came up with the idea of Dancing Leaf.

We are fascinated by names. What’s the story behind your brand name?

So, my youngest daughter Parmangana came up with the brand name when she was 12 years old. The question she asked me is “Mumma what do you see when you brew your tea in a cup?” And to that I said, “I see them dancing in the cup.” To which she replied, “Then there’s your name, Mummy, Dancing Leaf!” (Leaf since its all about each leaf literally).

Which are your best selling products?

We have a range of 150 – 200 teas which consist of both global teas from China, Taiwan, Japan, and local blends. We also craft a wide range of teaware to compliment the teas. In addition to these, we do seasonal and all year round gifting items which can be personalized and customized to a great degree. I personally would recommend the wooden gift boxes which have an array of our most popular flavors. Apart from this, I would also surely suggest the Bueno & Double walled cups.

What kind of people do you create your products for?

We cater to people of all kinds. We supply to individuals, corporates, wedding and event planners, and others. Our client list is diverse, because our forte is to customize and curate for our clients.

What are the challenges you face in connection with achieving your goals?

There are no challenges as such that we are currently facing. The market is growing and people are now more aware of the health benefits and rather enjoy their cuppa chai.

Where do you see your brand three years from now?

We have a lot of exciting things coming up, which will be revealed along the way.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?

I would have probably taken a sabbatical and then gone back to looking into other things… but whatever said and done, I am glad destiny has brought me here.
