November is for Movember

November is coming. And so is Movember. What is Movember? Why is it commemorated in November? And how can you be a part of it? Discover.

Mo is short for moustache. Movember is a word coined out of moustache and November. Growing out one’s facial hair for 30 days in November is what “Movember” is about. Movember is meant to raise awareness for cancer.

When did it begin?

Movember began in Australia in 2003. It is commemorated to raise awareness about prostate and testicular cancers. It is organised by the Movember Foundation, a nonprofit organisation.

“We are all about the mustache and only the mustache,” said Movember’s U.S. Director Mark Hedstrom. “What we’re asking them to do is participate by changing their appearance. What that fosters is a conversation.”

From there, Hedstrom said men can explain why they’re growing a mustache and start talking about men’s health.

How can I participate?

To participate in Movember, start with a fresh face at the beginning of the month and “donate your face” until Nov. 30 by not shaving. You can raise funds, too. The Movember Project has donated more than 800 programs to date.

How can women participate?

Women can participate in Movember by pushing the men in their lives to grow mustaches and getting them to be active as part of Movember’s new “Move” initiative.

Alternatively, women can skip the salon visit (or leg shave or whatever) and donate the money saved to a cancer foundation.

What do I need to know about prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the world. It accounts for over 10 percent of all new cancer cases and about 5 percent of all cancer deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the world behind heart disease.

What are the rules?

1. Begin the 1st of November with a clean shaven face.
2. You must grow and groom a moustache for the whole month.
3. You cannot have a beard – which means no joining your sideburns to your beard.
4. Nor can you join your chin to your handlebars.
